Course Structure 

This program is 15 undergraduate credits valid during Winter Term. 

Course Schedule

January

 Online pre-departure orientation course.

February

 

4 weeks studying and sleeping at the Universidad de Chile Forestry Department's Field Station at Frutillar including field trips to Chiloe Islands and research sites.

Courses include Consensus in Natural Resources, Forest Ecology, Salmon Conservation, and a guest speaker seminar. See more details below.

March

Week 1: field course in Coyhaique. 
  Week 2-3: OFOR488 International Internship. 3cr.

 

Students have the option to stay on for the NEW spring break program "Parks, Protected Areas, and Eco-tourism of Patagonia Chile" that will include rafting and hiking in nearby national parks. 

Courses

Students will take a variety of ecology-focused courses online pre-departure and in-person at participating Chilean universities. Courses will fulfill degree requirements for College of Forestry, College of Agricultural Sciences, and CEOAS students. Other majors may use these credits are electives and prefessional experience (internship). 

Courses include*:

  • Pre-departure orientation course (1 credit)
  • Forest Ecology (FES/FOR 341 – 3 credits). This course has a prerequisite (Forest Biology or a Biology series) that students must complete by the end of Fall Term 2024 to be eligible for the program.
  • Aquatic Systems and Salmon Conflicts (FW 499 – 3 credits)
  • Consensus and Natural Resources (FES/FW 485 – 3 credits)
  • Seminar (Course Number TBD – 2 credits)
  • Internship (FOR/FWCS/INTL 410 – 3 credits) at locations such as INFOR, CIEP, Parque Pumalin, Senda Darwin, and others

 

*If you have already completed one or more of these courses, talk to your advisor about substituting the credits for others.

Requirements

At least sophomore class standing by beginning of program
2.75 OSU GPA or higher
Satisfactory OSU Conduct Record
All applicants must successfully complete an interview demonstrating academic purpose and maturity.
Knowledge of Spanish is beneficial, but not necessary

Physcial requirements: extensive walking/hiking
